Travis Cooper Takes on New Role For Girls' Wrestling

At the 2020 July WAWC board meeting, board elections took place and a new girls’ wrestling board position was created. It is the board’s intent that this position will help support and promote girls’ wrestling in Waverly, Shell Rock, and surrounding areas. Travis Cooper is the individual tasked with this new role and he’s already got some ideas on the direction he would like to see girls’ wrestling take in the coming months and years.

“I believe my position in the club is important at this time because both WAWC and I want to make girls’ wrestling more popular and grow the program in the years to come.” Here are some specific opportunities or approaches he would like to see for girls’ wrestling:

  1. Promote girls’ wrestling by organizing a few girls-only clinics utilizing successful, collegiate female wrestlers to help younger girls grow and learn the sport of wrestling.
  2. Invite and encourage younger girls to join our club and try out the sport of wrestling to continue to build our group.
  3. Encourage young girl wrestlers to attend girls’ high school tournaments so they can get excited for their own futures in the sport and to see the older girls as role models.

Cooper is very excited for the start of the season and his ultimate goal in this new position is “to give female wrestlers every opportunity that the boys get to compete and get better.”
